Brief description of event
The Awareness and Screening Campaign against lead exposure and contamination consists of a series of activities designed to draw the attention of the public and policy-makers to the need for effective regulations to limit the exposure of vulnerable groups to lead from paint. A podcast aimed at the general public and journalists will also be recorded and broadcast on both social media and online media to raise public awareness and influence paint manufacturers to speed up the reformulation of paints. Awareness-raising videos filmed by a well-known artist for young people, in his capacity as an ambassador for the elimination of lead-based paints, will be shared on the organisation’s social media channels to further raise awareness. Finally, a press conference with journalists will be organised to educate them and help them improve the quality of their articles when reporting on lead poisoning and contamination.

Sensibiliser et agir pour prévenir l’intoxication au plomb à travers les réseaux sociaux.
Start date

Brief description of event

From Law to Impact: Cookware Regulatory Wins in India, Ghana, and Mexico
Start date

Brief description of event
Three different regulations to eliminate lead in cookware. One question: what does it take to translate regulations into impactful tools that reduce lead poisoning? In 2026, India (Tamil Nadu) and Ghana each secured meaningful regulatory wins restricting lead in cookware, while Mexico is advancing lead prevention on two fronts: existing standards on lead in ceramics, now under review as part of this year’s national quality infrastructure plan, and a broader National Strategy on lead exposure. This webinar brings these efforts into one conversation, featuring researchers, regulators and technical experts from Pure Earth, the Ghana Standards Authority and Mexico’s health sector to explore what it took to garner government support and the challenges ahead around enforcement and implementation. This International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, Pure Earth is focused on highlighting the systemic change it takes to move from regulation to actual impact that reduces lead poisoning in children. Panelists include: Evans Aseidu, Ghana Standards Authority G. Bhavani, Senior Director & Head, Bureau of Indian Standards Dr. Alejandra Cantoral, Professor, Universidad Iberoamericana Benjamin Cheabu, Technical Program Manager, Pure Earth Ghana Emershia Sharmine, Senior Program Manager – Tamil Nadu, Pure Earth India Moderated by Richard Reithinger, VP of Programs, Pure Earth. From Law to Impact: Cookware Regulatory Wins in India, Ghana, and Mexico
Start date
22.10.2026
End date
22.10.2026
Start date
22.10.2026
End date
22.10.2026
International Lead Poisoning Prevention School Sensitization Campaign and Social Media Campaign
Start date
20.10.2026

Brief description of event
Lead poisoning is a serious health problem, especially for children. Many people are still unaware that everyday items like paint, toys, water pipes, and cosmetics can contain lead and cause long-term damage to the brain and body. To prevent this, more public awareness and education are needed at all levels of society. Engaging school students is important as children are the most affected by lead exposure. Teaching them about lead and its dangers helps them stay safe and also share the message with their families and friends. CFEW has consistently conducted the ILPPW Campaign for over 3 years, expanding awareness creation about the sources, impacts and prevention mechanisms of lead poisoning. This year, the campaign will be intensified by providing students with a more in-depth and relatable understanding of lead poisoning by training them to easily “detect” sources of lead poisoning and actively prevent contamination and poisoning. To help reach a larger audience, a radio session will provide information and practical tips on how to avoid lead exposure and also sensitize the general public through our social media campaign on the dangers of lead.

Lead-Safe School

Brief description of event
The Lead-Safe Schools Campaign is a school-based awareness and environmental education initiative led by the Rural Environment and Development Organisation (REDO) as part of the International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week 2026, under the theme “From Detection to Prevention.” The campaign will use school environmental clubs as a practical platform to increase students’ understanding of lead exposure and promote simple actions that can help prevent exposure, particularly among children. The campaign will engage members of school environmental clubs through an interactive training covering five key topics: what lead is, where lead can potentially be found, why children are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure, how exposure can be prevented, and how students can help protect themselves, their classmates and their families. The training will use simple language, pictures, discussions and real-life situations to ensure that students can easily understand and apply the information. Following the training, students will participate in a Lead-Safe School Environmental Walk around their school environment. Guided by REDO facilitators and teachers, students will observe and identify potential environmental sources or situations that could create lead exposure risks, such as deteriorating paint, batteries, electronic waste, waste-burning areas and other potentially hazardous materials. Students will record observations and discuss practical prevention measures. The activity will focus on identifying potential risks rather than diagnosing lead contamination, which requires appropriate scientific testing. The campaign will emphasize a practical rather than technical approach, using the simple See–Think–Act method. Students will be encouraged to observe their surroundings, think about who could potentially be exposed and identify actions that can reduce the risk. Through the environmental clubs, students will also share key messages with their classmates and families, creating a link between school-based awareness and household-level prevention. Ultimately, the campaign seeks to empower students to become Lead-Safe Student Champions who can recognize potential risks, practice safer behaviours and encourage others to take preventive action. By working through existing school environmental clubs, REDO will establish a sustainable platform for continued environmental health education beyond the campaign week.

Lead Stops Here: Using Behavioural Science to Prevent Childhood Lead Poisoning
Start date
08.10.2026
End date
08.10.2026
Brief description of event
Every year, International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week shines a light on a silent threat to our children's future. Lead exposure is invisible, tasteless, and odorless, yet it causes irreversible damage to the developing brains and bodies of millions children. While awareness is growing, traditional education alone is not enough to stop this preventable tragedy. Why? Because lead poisoning is a unique behavioural challenge. The threat is imperceptible, the effects are delayed, and the ability to prevent it often feels outside a caregiver's control. Join us for a special webinar ahead of International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week as we explore how to bridge the gap between knowledge and taking protective action. This session will introduce UNICEF's REACH Framework, a cutting-edge social and behaviour change (SBC) tool designed to tackle environmental health risks and applying it to prevent childhood lead poisoning. In this webinar, you will learn: Why lead poisoning is so difficult to address: Understand the cognitive, social, and economic barriers that prevent protective behaviours, even when the risks are known. The REACH Framework: Discover a structured five-part approach (Recognition, Engagement, Action, Context, Habit) to designing effective SBC interventions for children's environmental health. Turning Knowledge into Action: Learn practical strategies to "make the invisible visible," moving beyond awareness to equip families with the motivation and means to protect their children. Ready-to-Use Tools: Get access to UNICEF's new social behaviour change materials related to childhood lead poisoning, designed to help partners and advocates create context-specific, behaviourally informed campaigns. Speakers: Ukasha Ramli, Senior Adviser of Social Behaviour Change, UNICEF Lisa Tanaka, Social & Behaviour Change Officer, UNICEF Bret Ericson, Programme Specialist, UNICEF Sowmya, University of Texas at Dallas, neuroscience student Steven Prince, Behavioral Scientist, Children's Health Protection Division, U.S.EPA

Uganda Lead Safety Roundtable 2026 for Data, Solutions and Action for a Lead-Free Uganda
Start date
18.10.2026
End date
20.10.2026
Brief description of event
Uganda Lead Safety Roundtable 2026 is a national multi-stakeholder dialogue convened to examine the growing challenge of lead exposure and lead poisoning in Uganda, strengthen the evidence base, and identify practical pathways for prevention and action.
Lead exposure is a serious but preventable public health and environmental challenge. It can occur through multiple pathways, including contaminated paint, soil, dust, water, industrial activities, informal recycling and the unsafe handling and recycling of lead-containing products such as used lead-acid batteries. Children and women of child-bearing age are particularly vulnerable to its harmful effects. Despite the potential risks, there is a need for stronger, accessible and coordinated Uganda-specific data to understand where lead exposure is occurring, who is most affected, what the major sources are, and how communities, government, businesses and civil society can respond effectively.
The Uganda Lead Safety Roundtable 2026 will bring together government institutions, researchers, health professionals, environmental experts, civil society organisations, academia, industry representatives, waste and recycling actors, development partners and affected communities to:
Map the evidence: What data currently exists on lead exposure and poisoning in Uganda, and where are the major evidence gaps?
Understand sources and hotspots: What are the major sources and pathways of lead exposure across Uganda?
Strengthen data systems: How can Uganda improve lead testing, monitoring, reporting, research and public access to data?
Share practical solutions: What interventions are already working, and what can be scaled at community, district and national levels?
Strengthen prevention: How can Uganda reduce exposure through better regulation, safer production, responsible waste management and public awareness?
Protect vulnerable communities: How can children, workers, informal recyclers and communities living near potential sources of contamination be better protected?
Define a way forward: What commitments, partnerships and policy actions are needed to build a coordinated national response?
The roundtable will move beyond raising awareness to develop a practical action agenda for lead safety in Uganda, including priorities for research and data generation, policy and regulatory action, community-level interventions, responsible industry practices and collaboration among key stakeholders.
What type of activity do you plan to organize for this year’s ILPPW?
Roundtable discussion: We shall invite various players from the different sections in Uganda to be part off the event so that during the round table discussions we are able to reach a conclusion on various issues that are related to the Lead Poisoning in Uganda that been not really discussed At lengthy.

Brief description of event
We want to talk more about prevention rather than detection, we wish all mind sets be in the same line of understanding that Lead is a toxicant with a wide-ranging health impacts, affecting the neurological, cardiovascular, renal, gastrointestinal and haematological systems particularly to young children due to their unique pathways that can lead to higher exposures than adults. Despite widespread recognition of the harmful effects of lead and actions in Tanzania, exposure to lead, particularly during childhood, remains a key concern for health care takers and public health officials countrywide. IRTECO has chosen a cluster of over 2,000 population with a primary school of over 400 students. A place of 1,500 women and 200 youth to stand together to be equipped with lead effects and sources. The campaign will enable the target population to know the important sources of lead exposure include environmental contamination from mining, manufacturing and recycling activities, and the use of lead in a wide-range of consumer products. The area is not having the electricity services so becoming one of the major sites with higher uses of lead-acid batteries for agriculture and fisheries activities. IRTECO sees the necessity of bringing together other lead-links-products containing lead such as pigments, paints, solder, stained glass, lead crystal glassware, ceramic glazes, jewellery, toys. Drinking water dealers due to leaching from pipes or other lead-containing materials in water systems etc. Ultimately, the campaign will raise awareness about the health effects of lead exposure and ways to prevent such effects.

Networking for Society Development Organization (NESODO) will conduct a zero-budget community awareness and engagement campaign during International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week 2026 under the theme “From Detection to Prevention.” The campaign will build on NESODO’s previous LEEP-supported work in Mwanza, including community and stakeholder engagement and evidence generated through testing of paints and selected consumer products. During 18–24 October 2026, NESODO will share evidence-based awareness messages through social media and community networks on lead exposure, its potential sources, health risks, particularly for children and other vulnerable groups, and practical actions for prevention. The campaign will also include a voluntary online community perception and awareness survey to understand what people reached through the campaign know, believe and would like to learn about lead exposure and safer products. The survey findings will be summarized as community feedback, with clear acknowledgement that the survey is not a nationally representative population study. NESODO will use the findings to identify information gaps and community perspectives that can inform future awareness, stakeholder engagement and lead exposure prevention activities. Key findings will be shared with relevant stakeholders and partners to support continued dialogue and a practical way forward for lead exposure prevention in Tanzania.
What type of activity do you plan to organize for this year’s ILPPW?
- Social media activity: NESODO will conduct a week-long public awareness campaign through its existing social media and community communication networks, sharing evidence-based messages on lead exposure, its sources, health risks and practical prevention measures.
- Advocacy: The campaign will promote continued action on lead exposure prevention by highlighting community awareness needs, sharing lessons from NESODO’s previous lead-related work, and encouraging continued engagement among relevant stakeholders.
- Media engagement: NESODO will share campaign messages and key lead prevention information with relevant media contacts and networks to help broaden public awareness and encourage wider discussion on lead exposure prevention in Tanzania.
